A new renaissance of car automotive enthusiasm has begun in the 21st century, and many major brands have contributed to tremendous advancements in the automotive industry. These advancements call for new branding and customer interaction that underlines a company’s experience and builds its identity. No city was a greater contributor to the American car industry than Detroit whose landscape is dense with industrial history. Among these many industrial facilities that surround Detroit lies the Ford River Rouge automotive plant, which contributed to the growth of its nearby city host since 1928. As these powerhouses of the industry grew, they worked in conjunction with a nearby island known to locals as “the dirtiest square mile in Michigan.” This site, Zug Island, has served as a steel manufacturing facility for the automotive industry since 1902. 


Over its lifespan, Zug Island has riddled the surrounding landscape and watershed with various highly toxic pollutants. Although US Steel abandoned the site in 2020, the site continues to leach into the Detroit and Rouge River and remains a harmful eyesore to the community. Zug Island’s historical connection to both Ford and Detroit, and its desperate need for environmental remediation makes it a prime candidate to address the growing interest in car culture, equip Ford with a means to display their 21st century experience, and provide a renewed landscaped experience for the surrounding community.

As a series of research investigations into contemporary technology, Super Booleans utilizes simple boolean operations (such as intersection, difference, and union) as an attempt to develop new design methodologies and workflows. During the research, both physical and digital fabrication techniques were developed through computational design and algorithmic modeling. Drawing procedures borrowed from stone stereotomy and descriptive geometry and were utilized toward the production of two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects paying close attention to surface properties like surface normals, intersecting curves, and other boolean operation resultants. These research practices then culminated in an architectural scale application.

Super Booleans proposes a new library in downtown Knoxville, TN with a focus on bringing new indoor and outdoor community spaces to the area. The development of this library stemmed from a series of boolean operations which were catalogued according to the programmatic needs of the library. From this catalogue, various geometric combinations were assessed and diagramed with one chosen iteration pushed for final project development.

Järvenpää, Finland


	Over the course of 3 days, a team of 7 travelled to Alvar Aalto’s Villa Kokkenen in Järvenpää, Finland. Every detail 

(interior and exterior)&#38;nbsp;of  the villa, sauna, and site were measured and triangulated using traditional water level tubes, meter sticks, and string. From these measurements, multiple hand drawings and a model were produced which include site, plan with furniture, elevation, and section. More than 2,000 points were recorded on the site alone with all 200 plus trees and a full interior drawn and modelled accurately.
Both the drawings and model are displayed in the Villa Kokkonen Musuem.

This 3rd year technology
project considered a redesign
of Knoxville’s famous Worlds
Fair Park Amphitheater,
originally designed by McCarty
Holsaple McCarty Architects.
The project began with testing
and understanding structural
systems of varying complexity
using Karamba, a software
plugin for Grasshopper. Karamba
in conjunction with Kangaroo,
another plugin which focuses on
physical simulation, allowed for
testing of complex forms such as
space trusses.

Redesiging the Worlds Fair Park
Amphitheater also required
understanding these systems in
the application of large tensile
structures. The design tested
here drew inspiration from the
Rosa Parks Transit Terminal in
Detroit, MI. The tensile fabric
and structural steel frame were
also run through a Kangaroo
script to document stresses
within the system.

An analysis of CalPoly’s 2015 Solar Decathelon House studying wind and solar patterns in order to understand and design around thermal load, passive cooling, and other site specific conditions. The house was reconstructed in 3D and tested in various climatic conditions in the US. Afterwards, the design was edited in order to reach proper comfort levels for the area. These edits included adjusting the house’s orientation, adding or removing apertures, adding solar panels to provide shade and capture sun, and creating thermal storage walls, rock beds, and stack ventilation.

Co-creating the Future: Inclusion in and through Design


Architectural design requires the negotiation of a wide variety of often conflicting constraints and conditions. This puts a tremendous burden on designers to understand and evaluate all the design and site parameters in the conceptual phase of the project. Design methodologies that utilize conventional means of representation such as site diagrams, maps, or other orthographic projections may not always be adequate to produce truly integrative design solutions. They often simplify conditions for user clarity or eliminate volumetric and temporal data entirely. As computational design tools develop, however, and the mapping of georeferenced urban data becomes more commonplace, it becomes possible to integrate spatial information into design strategies and evaluate various relationships more effectively. 
Taking clues from medical imaging, Self-Organizing Space uses voxel data to represent volumetric gradients in material properties and densities of spatial conditions. This method can be used to generate morphogenic spatial analysis of an existing site. The project explores how self-organizing programmatic agents can use this analysis and embedded behaviors to visualize performative schematic design scenarios. These agents, which represent a variety of functional spaces, programmatic requirements, design constraints, and value sets, can negotiate the myriad of environmental and socio-economic site conditions as well as interact with other adaptive programmatic spaces.

“Los Angeles is a city where natural history, aerospace research, astronomical observation, and the planetary sciences hold outsized urban influence. The city has been ornamented with scientific equipment, crowned with electromagnetic antennae, and ringed with seismic stations, transforming into an urban- scale research facility, a living device inhabited by millions of people on the continent’s westernmost edge.”

Mission 3.5 focuses on LA as a crossroads for the many different agents of modern society and attempts to speculate architecture’s role within the economies of criminality, development, homelessness, spectacle, observance, machine, &#38;amp; natural order/disorder. The project began with an analysis of LA’s history as a component of the El Camino Real, a 600 mile route connecting 21 Spanish missions along California’s coast. As an extension to the 3rd mission along this route (Mission San Gabriel), exists to serve as a sort of haven the aforementioned agents. As an aid in the design of Mission 3.5, a series of photographs taken by Dennis Feldman acted as example characters for who the space may be designed around.

The 21st century holds a plethora of opportunities to improve multiple aspects of design across the globe. A major focus in architecture today is sustainability and LEED certification, but Super Habitats 2080 seeks to dothis and much more. Copy-paste, cookie cutter design can be seen permeating neighborhoods throughout the US. To address this, the Super Habitats 2080 project sought to merge technologies in architecture and genetics to maintain interest in sustainable design and efficient construction all while preventing saturation of the housing industry with repetative architecture.


60 years ago, architects created some of the most influential works of the 20th century in an attempt to look forward 60 years in the future. With Super Habitats 2080, we attempt to look forward another 60 years from 2020 to change the way people think about the typical neighborhood. Rather than reinventing the well, architectural precedents, influential to the 20th century, were used to determine the first of many iterations that would make up a genealogy for housing design. This genealogy would eventually become the super habitat of 2080.
